Technology in the Real World

It is interesting to see the advances in technology that is in use out in the real world. I have taken a closer look at all that is available. Some things I take for granted such as digital cameras, using debit cards to medical technology. Technology is everywhere, in all facets of life. I am discovering how dependent I am on technology. I must admit that I have been teaching for 30 years and have always been afraid of technology. I was one of the last people to even get a cell phone and now I don't know how I ever got along without it.

I spent a lot of time this past week with my mother who has been in the hospital. I was amazed to see computers set up in each patient’s room. The nurses use this for taking vitals, dispensing medications, lab testing results, etc. Nurses no longer carry around the big charts on patients but record all this information onto the computer. Information is only a click away.

I think this is wonderful advancement but I still would feel the need for a back-up system in case the computer had a glitch. Computers are great when they are working but there is the possibility of human error or lost files or records. As you can see, I am a little skittish due to my computer problems. I don't always trust them. Even with the computers in my kindergarten classroom children have deleted programs.

This is one reason I am not very confident with computers and am afraid of making a mistake that cannot be corrected. But with more exposure to working on the computer I am gaining knowledge and becoming less stressed when working on the computer.

I too have had files deleted by students and by myself too! Unfortunately you have to learn the hard way to keep a back up of all of your files in case they're deleted. But technology does make it easier too, like when you can cut and paste lesson plans or citations. Nothing's perfect, but like you said there's a lot of need for improvement which will continue to happen.

I hope your Mom is doing well and you don't have to see too much more of those computers!
